e2e contest – hobo/survival kit fishing

Equip2Endure has a contest going where you must take video of you doing some sort of bushcrafting skill.  I had a short camping/fishing trip planned and decided to use it as an opportunity to try using my survival kit to catch a fish.

We didn’t catch anything at all but I had fun trying to figure out how to cast the hobo rod I made, and below is the video. Parts of it are pretty dull, but I am not very good at editing up video to cut out all the long uneeded parts. Feel free to skip around.

gone fishin

Hit the lake for the first time in about 15 years or so yesterday. Looking at all the events that took place through out the day, it seemed to be a disaster.

As I was getting into my car to leave the crotch of my pants blew out. After changing and making the drive, as I was walking along the lake carting a bunch of stuff with me and dragging a wheeled ice chest behind, my foot decided to meet the ice chest, and I tripped, rolled my ankle and fell. I landed hard busting up my knee and cutting my hand on some rocks.

We finally make it to our spot, have about an hour of peace before what seemed to be an entire bus load of tourists with their kids showed up and had to be right next to us. They were some of the most rude and inconsiderate people I’ve ever encountered. They were very loud and as we could see fish swimming nearby before, now they all seemed to disappear. Within five minutes of their presence there was a ton of plastic trash in the water.

This went on for a while and I spilled my powerbait nuggets twice.

But it was all worth it, I enjoyed myself because I caught a fish! It had been a long time, and I forgot how much I enjoyed fishing. It was a Rainbow Trout, and probably not long out of the hatchery at about 8″ long.

We had a good number of bites but I think the hooks I bought were too big, but and between two of us and dozens of bites, and I was only able to set the hook once. We’re going back with smaller hooks soon.
